Fears of Covid Resurgence as Delta Variant Spreads Rapidly

New covid cases in the United States are rising rapidly as the highly contagious Delta variant – first identified in India – is growing more dominant.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the delta variant is now the dominant strain in the US, accounting for the majority of COVID-19 cases.

So far, the Delta variant has been detected around 100 countries globally and health experts have said the Delta variant is more transmissible than any other identified variant so far.

While some states are staying away from mask mandates, others are embracing a return to preventative measures.

According to the CDC, more than 50% of the US is not yet fully vaccinated, an obstacle that has become increasingly worrisome to health experts as resistance to inoculation rises with the spread of misinformation.

Americans 12 and Older Can Get a Covid-19 Vaccine, But Younger Children (5-To-11- Years Old) Will Have to Wait Until Middle of Winter

With many schools across the United States now just weeks from reopening for the fall semester, pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and Moderna are still doing clinical trials to see how coronavirus vaccines work in children under 12 — if they’re safe and what the right dose should be.

Data for 2-to-5-year-olds could arrive soon after. For the youngest children, Pfizer said it could potentially get data in October or November, and shortly thereafter ask the FDA to authorize emergency use.

Because much of the country’s student population is not yet vaccinated, organizations such as The American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending that all children over the age of 2 wear masks when returning to school this year, regardless of vaccination status.

We need to prioritize getting children back into schools alongside their friends and their teachers — and we all play a role in making sure it happens safely,” said Sonja O’Leary, chair of the AAP Council on School Health.
